On May 21st, 25 kids in white and purple gowns marched singly into New Zion Christian Church to Go Fish’s Lord I give you me for their kindergarten graduation from Memorial Christian Academy. Affiliated with New Zion Christian Church, Memorial Christian Academy is a non-denominational Pre-K to Grade 6 school on the west side of Houston. “We combine our graduation with Sunday morning service as a way of bringing the school and the church closer and highlighting the Christian foundation of the school,” said Mrs. Linda Keathley, principal of Memorial Christian Academy.

Soon after making their entry, the young graduates’ choir swayed in rhythm and excitement as they sang their songs of passage- First grade, First Grade and It’s time to say goodbye..

Then, Mrs. Keathley read the thoughtful and sometimes funny but heartfelt graduates’ Letters to God. The letters were an interesting mix of accolades to parents and petitions to God about first grade, heaven, green zones and animal rights. Endearingly, Varsha Kumar wrote:

“It’s been a great year, the 2006 class has been wonderful and we’re blessed to have been a part of their success,”

“Dear God, help me to grow up to be like my mum. Sometimes, she gets upset with me but I know she loves me and my dad loves me too” With funny sincerity, Ekelemchi Eteh wrote: “Dear God, I would like to go to heaven someday but not right now…”

Varsha Kumar and Jane Escanan shared the Student of the Year award for outstanding scholarship and demonstration of loving attitudes towards others. Varsha Kumar’s mother, Ms. Rajeswari Ganesan, was eager to explain the reason for her daughter’s success. “Varsha’s teachers were nurturing and loved all the kids like their own. Varsha really bonded with her teachers and had a great experience.”

Before the presentation of diplomas, Principal Keathley exhorted the parents and relatives of the young graduates- “There is a difference between raising and training. Training takes consistency, perseverance and affection. Set the rules…help your children to dream. Make sure they make friends that have the right influence on them.”

Finally, diplomas were presented to the graduates, to the applause of their proud parents and teachers. Then, the latter part of the Sunday morning service followed.

“It’s been a great year, the 2006 class has been wonderful and we’re blessed to have been a part of their success,” said kindergarten teacher Nicole Howard at the end of the event. Graduate Alonzo Sule also reminisced then looked to the future. “I like when we dressed up like Santas, I liked homework and….oh, my teachers were good,” he said with a smile, “Now I am ready for first grade.’’
