With the warm sun above and the light breezes blowing, on April 30th 2006, about 20 young couples of New Zion Christian Church met for a picnic at Bear Creek Park on the west side of Houston. That was the third time the Young Couples group was coming together and boy, did they enjoy themselves.
“This is a great meeting, in a more casual setting rather than the usual learning atmosphere,” said Irene Charles, enthusiastically.
In their prior two meetings, the couples sat down to delicious meals at Pastors Faluade’s home, accompanied by teaching, a video presentation and lively discussions but nothing had connected the Young Couples like the laxity of outdoor space, great weather, the icebreaker, the aroma of barbecue meat wafting through the air and the one on one conversations.
The ice-breaker was a guessing game that had the couples soliciting each other’s help to find out what the sticky notes in their backs said. Was it a state, a city, a person or an animal? That got the couples moving, guessing- hitting or missing, laughing, talking and…talking.

“We’ve had some great meetings but I thought the picnic brought a lot more connection between couples and that was great to see,”
Then, the couples sat down to hot dogs, hamburgers and pork chops fresh off the grill. They mixed at different eating stations and got to know each other even better. The kids who came to the picnic were not disappointed either- they frolicked, rode in push and ride wagons and tricycles, played kid baseball and soccer and enjoyed the food.
“We’ve had some great meetings but I thought the picnic brought a lot more connection between couples and that was great to see,” remarked Pastor Gbolahan Faluade, Associate Pastor of New Zion Church and overseer of connection groups. |

The mission of the Young Couples’ fellowship is to become vessels of transformation among their peers and the picnic event fostered more fellowship and cohesion, which the couples need as they continue with their mission.
